Wild Orange Wins! Gets Grease GONE.

Life is messy! Oh yes. In our home, we’re trying to work on reducing our chemical exposure, one step at a time. Check this out–> Homer was working on switching out the spark plugs in the truck (thanks, YouTube!) and got, as you can predict, super messy all over.

So, he came in to wash up before delving into my special boxed macaroni and cheese and instead of grabbing the chems, we decided to get dōTERRA’s Wild Orange out and put it to work! Watch as greasy, grimy hands (from fixing the truck engine) are absolutely DEALT WITH using dōTERRA’s Wild Orange essential oil and On Guard soap. (Side note: You’ll get a similar affect using Lemon, Lime or Grapefruit oils- citrus oils are amazing for cleansing, inside and out) Not that being able to fix a car defines manliness, but dang, he was pretty manly that day….not gonna lie.

Natural, safe, effective and won’t dry out your hands or make them burn or itch from chemical exposure! (Read a lot more about uses for Wild Orange here.)

doTerra: The Bridge over Troubled Waters

It’s been at our house for the past week with back-to-back sick baby girls! LadyBird’s temp was 102, with breathing issues in her nose and chest. Three days of misery. Did you read that!? ONLY THREE. Not 7-10 days or more. Three. We use Doterra’s oils everyday to strengthen our bodies and when hard times come, we’re able to fight back because we’re in fighting condition!

Our sweet Lemon-Lime developed a reaction to something she ate and has had projectile *everything* and a temp of 103.

While we used an OTC temp reducer when it got over 101, we used Doterra’s essential oils topically, internally and in the diffuser to help ease their suffering throughout the day, and a bridge between doses and at night and it was so wonderful to manage and relive my babies and not to pump them full of extra chemicals that Doterra’s oils can address!

For little ones with tummy issues:
-Fractionated coconut oil on tummy and bowels, plus 2 drops of Digest Zen. Rub in gently. Do 3x per day.
-1 drop Lemon in water 2x per day
While issues persist.

For head and muscle/joint issues:
-Peppermint on hairline, temples and back of neck, and on muscles/joints (dilute with carrier oil) as often as needed. Also helps cool off the body. Use tepid washcloth to wipe down skin as needed.

For clear airways:
-Diffuse Breathe in a room that has a Humidifier running.
-Dilute Breathe and rub onto chest and swipe below nose.
-put a drop of Breathe on bottoms of feet at night and naps

For nighttime rest diffuse in a room with a humidifier:
5 drops Breathe
4 drops OnGuard
4 drops Serenity or Lavender

For immune system strength:
OnGuard plus Frankincense in a rollerbottle on bottoms of feet and spine/brain stem 4x per day. (Or dilute with carrier oil and use 1 drop of each 4x per day)
OnGuard beadlet 2x per day

To cleanse the puke bucket and other surfaces:
Hot water
Spray with onGuard cleaner concentrate

Lots of sleep and fluids and washing of hands, love, and stroking of hair and holding and rocking and singing is also recommended. 🙂

Be blessed, friends!

New Year, New You!!

It is 2017 already? Honestly. I can’t believe I’m at the age where I can remember where I was THIRTY years ago… 1987. Eek. Thirty years ago I was 10 and I was super into Get in Shape Girl! and Amy Grant and patent leather shoes and I had just gotten a 10-speed bike for my 1oth birthday. Life was grand! 1987

Notables from 1987:

  • Disposable contact lenses first became available allowing nerds, dorks and geeks everywhere to now blend in
  • The portable computer was at its lightest weight, of 2 lbs
  • “The Simpsons” had its debut, offending conservative parents everywhere, ‘doh!
  • “Dirty Dancing” was the top movie (Not, for me thought. I had to wait until I was 14 and it was available on video and I then snuck to my friends to watch it under cover of night)
  • Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” topped the music charts
  • Ronald Reagan was president; Donald Trump famously said he would NEVER run for president
  • Talking Alf was the toy parents were punching each other in the face for at Christmas.

new-yearThe new year is a time of reflection for most people, a time to look back and contemplate successes, failures, milestones, and to think about how to move ahead. Do you make resolutions? I stopped making official “resolutions” a long time ago, because they were really just a way for me to measure my failures. Instead, I write down ‘goals’.

While I am a naturally goal-oriented person, and I thrive on achievement, a goal is something to aim for and work toward, and if you don’t reach it, goals are adjustable based on how far you’ve come. I like that. So, I have a set of goals for this year. Looking back, I didn’t reach some of my goals from 2016 (although I DID lose all my baby weight), so I just transferred over the ones I still wanted to work toward, and I dumped the ones that, in retrospect, seemed like a they were no longer relevant to where I am in my life now.

New Year, New YOU

What does the new year look like for you? What do YOU look like in the new year? A fresh start doesn’t have to take place on January 1, but it’s certainly a good time to think about it. First of all, you are great and accepted enough, just as you are. But we all need a fresh start at some point, in some area of life- and I know I do!

inspireWellness is a life-long journey and the great thing is, you can start anytime. So- why wait? Why not start now? Maybe you’re just going to reduce how much you eat, by one item each day. Or increase how much you exercise by pushing yourself for one more minute. Or, adding in just one more day a week you made good food choices. Whatever it is for you- now is your time!

And yes- doTerra CAN help! How? That is an excellent question… See how you’re already so awesome?!

Whether your goals are financial, health-oriented, relationship-centered, spiritual, emotional or just a general desire to improve yourself- doTERRA has an opportunity for you to grab hold of something that will make a true difference in your life and they’re willing back it with the greens… $100’s worth, to be exact…

Check this out:

New Year, New Alicia …

I am SO excited for this promotion. It’s actually the same one that led to my own involvement with doTERRA. We wanted to explore essential oils and had decided that doTERRA was the company we were going to move forward with (If you want to know WHY, read here). We heard about the New Year, New You promotion and immediately knew it was the perfect timing. $100 in FREE product points? For just opening a membership account and buying a few things we were already planning to purchase? SIGN ME UP, PLEASE! TAKE MY MONEY!

alicia-at-camp-pinnacle2I didn’t realize at the time that this would be a solution to some of my financial goals, but it was! I didn’t realize it would be the answer to many of my health questions- but it WAS! I didn’t realize it would help me emotionally- but it HAS. I had no idea doTERRA would be the path ahead for us, but it has proven to be so…. Wow!.

I had no idea.

So, I have to ask you this: What are the possibilities for you? How, realistically, will you grab hold of them? What’s the plan? Why do things have to feel so out of reach? Why do you LET them feel that way? Truly, the only thing that holds you back is you. It’s me. We have mental blocks, issues from the past, fears- but what you dream of IS within reach. It IS. Don’t be held back. Let yourself GO.

Pressing Toward the Mark

My MOST favorite passage of Scripture is found in Philippians 3:7-14. Read this and see why:

“But what things were gain to me, I have counted these things to be loss for the sake of Christ. Yes, certainly, I count everything as loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have forfeited the loss of all things and count them as rubbish that I may gain Christ, and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is of God on the basis of faith, to know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if somehow I might make it to the resurrection of the dead. Not that I have already attained or have already been perfected, but I follow after it so that I may lay hold of that for which I was seized by Christ Jesus. Brothers, I do not count myself to have attained, but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal to the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

Do you have an anthem song for 2017? You should! That one you’re going to play super loud when things get tough? If not, you can borrow min! Here’s MY ANTHEM FOR 2017:

Peace: Body, Mind and Spirit

What is “peace” to you? On a grand scale, perhaps peace looks like a lack of war, or famine or struggle. For some, “peace” might be having the circumstances around you fall into place, or the people in your life getting along (for once). Maybe it’s more simple than that is just the way you find your own, personal calm amid the storm. Whatever “peace” means to you- do you have it? If not, why?

peace9.jpgMaybe you’ve defined it incorrectly? Let’s explore that. It’s important that, if you’re looking for something (like peace) in your life, that you understand what it is you’re looking for, so that you know when you’ve found it.

I know, for me, peace is an inner sensation, not an outside one (although external peace is lovely too!) – and if you’re anything like me, you struggle with your inner peace at times, especially when life gets real. That being said- you’re welcome to walk with me on the path the Lord is leading me, to understand and reconnect with Peace – body, mind and spirit.

DoTERRA has an essential oil blend actually called “Peace”, which is one of my all time favorite blends- and one of my most used. To me, it smells like a beautiful chocolate, with a hint of mint and a very subtle, distant note of vanilla. I LOVE it.

Here’s how I use it: First, once I pinpoint that it’s my inner peace I’m struggling with, I stop and take a deep breath, and reconnect with the composed, collected “me”. I use doTERRA’s Peace Touch Reassuring Blend to promote feelings of contentment, composure, and reassurance when anxious feelings overwhelm me. peace4

  1. Place a drop into palms of hands and rub on the back of neck, over the heart, on your temples and bottoms of the feet.
  2. Take another drop into palms and inhale deeply- probably 10 times. As I do this, I meditate on spiritually uplifting concepts.

Philippians 4:8-9 tells us, “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.”

Peace3-1.pngSo, for example, I Google “Scriptures about peace” and I say things like:

  • Psalm 29:11, “The Lord gives [me] His strength. The Lord blesses [me] with peace.”
  • Isaiah 43:2-3, “Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are Mine. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.”

When feelings of fear and anxiousness creep into our minds, we seek for peace and reassurance from many sources- but the one, true source is the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ.  Though it can be difficult to remain calm and composed in our hectic, unpredictable world, doTERRA Peace Reassuring Blend provides an escape from discontent and worry and it’s a great tool for helping you focus your mind and attention on the peace, not the storm.

Great for:

  • Kids at night- layer on bottoms of feet along with Lavender
  • Times of grief or pain- inhale and rub over heart and onto temples as often as needed
  • Anxiousness- Diffuse or inhale directly, stop and think calming thoughts, recite a prayer or speak positive words
  • Before a test or job interview or an upcoming difficult conversation- Rub onto temples, wrists and other pressure points
  • At bedtime- Bottoms of feet and back of neck. Layer with Serenity, Vetiver and/or Lavender

Scientists and psychologists have spent centuries trying to understand the phenomena we refer to as emotions. Although science can not yet definitively explain the exact mechanisms, we do know that emotions have vast influence on well-being. Employing the most current research and the purest essential oils, the new doTERRA Emotional Aromatherapy blends are unique volatile aromatic compounds that address the emotions that so greatly influence your health.
doTERRA’s Peace Reassuring Blend is a fusion of floral and mint essential oils. The amalgamation of popular essential oils such as Lavender and Spearmint, along with the essence of some lesser-known plants such as Labdanum creates a chemical profile rich in monoterpene esters and alcohols for a renewing and toning experience.
peace2How essential oils influence emotions through their aroma is a fascinatingly complex process. It wasn’t until the early 1990s, with a Nobel prize winning study by Linda Buck and Richard Axel, that biologists began to understand the chemical sensors responsible for the remarkable effects of scent. Recently, olfactory sensors were discovered to be present not only in our nose, but also in  our skin, a discovery that has a multitude of implications for the future of aromatherapy research and essential oil use. Scent is an amazingly powerful tool that we can use to influence our lives in a multitude of ways.
So, biologically speaking, the literal smell of Peace will help you regain your composure, calm your racing heart and mind, refocus your attention and help you begin to address what is causing such a lack of peace in your life right now.
So, have you thought about how YOU define peace? The best definition of real, actual peace is found in the Bible.
In the Old Testament, the word “Shalom” is the Hebrew word for “peace” and it means, “completeness, soundness, welfare, peace in human relationships and with God especially in covenant relationship.” (Strongs)
peace5.jpgThis is seen in this example of Isaiah 9:6, “For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on His shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
In the New Testament, the word “peace” is a Greek word meaning, “peace between individuals, i.e. harmony, concord; the way that leads to peace (salvation); in Christianity, the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly lot, of whatsoever sort that is.” (Strongs)
This can be seen in Colossians 3:15: “And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts…”
The Bible defines “peace” as being tranquility among mankind with each other, mankind with God, an assurance of salvation in the soul and fearing nothing that the world can bring at you. THAT is true peace.
If you’re looking for peace in your life (aren’t we all?!) – know what you’re looking for and then, go after it. How? How, in a crazy and sometimes horrible world can we find true peace, amid all the ruckus, hate, bad choices and more?
You get yourself right with the Prince of Peace and then YOU. MAKE. PEACE.
Peacemakers are blessed, the Bible promises that in Matthew 5.
It starts IN you, and it emanates FROM you and extends BEYOND you.
Don’t look for perfection, look for Peace.
peace8.jpgIn Luke 2, when the angels said “Peace on earth, goodwill toward men”- they were NOT talking about stuff like world peace. They were foretelling of what the birth of the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ, would accomplish. His death would bridge the gap that sin created- thereby bringing PEACE on earth, and God’s goodwill toward sinful mankind- because of Jesus.
You start THERE.
Jesus IS Peace. You MAKE PEACE.
I love you! Be blessed, friends!

Frankincense: Body, Mind and Spirit

Have you finished your Christmas/holiday shopping? Have you STARTED? I haven’t. Even though there are only 17 days left until Christmas, I haven’t bought one, single thing for anyone (unless you count groceries for my family, which I think SHOULD count…)

Actually, I really do wish we could do more making of gifts than buying. I am definitely a person that appreciates the ‘thought’ behind a gift – that means something to me. Meaning is a big deal for me in life in general, and in the gifts I give, and I try to infuse the gifts I give with thought and intention and purpose. I’m the kind of person who would rather have a drawing or a poem or a pair of hand-knit socks than a new pair of earrings. (Not shoes, though. I always want shoes, first. That’s very thoughtful.)

frank3See this picture? It’s one of the best gifts I’ve ever gotten- just a simple, hand drawn sketch from my husband for our anniversary. One of my favorite possessions. It’s the little things, with me, really.

Speaking of thoughtful gifts, if you read my previous blog, on Myrrh, it was a really eye-opening one for me, personally, to learn the thought, intention and purpose that God put into the gifts Jesus received as a child. Gold, a gift of enduring value, Myrrh and Frankincense.

I always thought they were, well, random, until I learned more about them, and then I was brought to tears. God is a God of purpose- from the purpose He gives to each human life, to the deliberate and meaningful gifts He gives- and the gifts give to Jesus were deeply representative of His life, and death.

Frankincense essential oil is known as a “life or death” oil- why? Oh, you will want to know, friends. 🙂 And keep reading for a GREAT DEAL on doTERRA’s Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils, just for this month ONLY…..!

Enjoy today’s connection to: Frankincense.

Frankincense has been used since pretty much the dawn of man for everything you can think of. In fact, in doTERRA we say, “when in doubt, get Frankincense out”.

Known as the king of essential oils, Frankincense has a variety of notable uses and benefits. This powerful essential oil is revered for its ability to:

  • Beautify and rejuvenate skin when applied topically
  • Promote cellular health
  • Strengthen immunity
  • Produce a healthy inflammatory response when taken internally
  • Promote feelings of satisfaction, peace, relaxation, and overall wellness

With all of its many uses, there is no question as to why Frankincense was highly esteemed by ancient civilizations and used for the most sacred of practices.

Frank2-1.pngA few other ways to use Frankincense:

  • Skin relief from unsightly and itchy, burny razor bumps – the chemical properties of Frankincense will aid in reducing appearances of skin imperfections and if you blend with lotion, it’ll keep help inflammation.
  • Diffuse Frankincense oil to help create a sense of purpose and intention for the day. The fragrances of Frankincense essential oil will also help bring added satisfaction, peace, relaxation, and even feelings of overall wellness to your morning routine.
  • One of Frankincense’s most powerful benefits is its ability to promote health, specifically cellular function. You can take Frankincense oil internally by adding one to two drops in a Veggie capsule or putting two drops into a shot glass and chugging it (this is what we do). This natural supplement will help support healthy cellular function. frank5-1.png
  • Add a couple drops of Frankincense oil to the moisturizer of your choice to help hydrate and rejuvenate the dry skin during the winter. I do this with my facial lotion as well and it has made a BIG difference in how my skin looks and feels.
  • Speaking of skin, apply this to scars, stretchmarks, skin blemishes and other skin appearance issues. Do it regularly, frequently and consistently and you’ll see *results*.
  • Whenever traveling somewhere dry, apply Frankincense oil to maintain healthy looking fingernails. Simply place a drop of oil on your nail and rub it around the cuticles and edges of your fingernails to help soothe dryness and keep them supple.
  • The chemical components of Frankincense result in an extremely powerful aroma that can help to dispel negative feelings—like stress. If you are feeling like the pressures of life are weighing down your mood, apply Frankincense to the bottom of your feet. The soothing sensation and aroma will promote feelings of relaxation and a balanced mood.
  • Rub into gums or swish in your mouth for gum and tooth care, and/or put a drop onto your toothpaste to help promote a healthy state of your mouth and to help prevent issues from cropping up. This is good to do each day, but step it up if you’re not feeling well or something doesn’t feel right in your mouth.
  • If you have, ahem, monthly lady issues, rub this over your external lady parts, where you cramp or get achy. Do as often as needed. Combine this with doTERRA’s Clary Calm for a major boost to moods and feelings and emotions. SO GOOD. Your family will thank you.

Of course there are many more ways you can use Frankincense, and the possibilities are endless. One amazing thing about Frankincense is that it acts as a ‘booster’ oil to anything you combine it with.

frank6For example, if you’re using Lavender to calm skin or to rest at night, add Frankincense and it increases the effects of the Lavender. If you’re using Melaleuca to help with scalp issues, add Frankincense. If you’re using On Guard to strengthen your immune system, add Frankincense.

On my own kids, I have a roller bottle that I’ve filled with doTERRA’s On Guard and doTERRA’s Frankincense and topped off with fractionated coconut oil. This is rolled onto the kids’ feet twice a day, and on their brain stem and spine each night.

So, yeah, some people think I’m dreaming – to think that doing this with doTERRA’s oils is going to make a difference , but if my kids not being sick for a year is dreaming- DON’T WAKE ME UP!

GET. FRANKINCENSE. It lasts a long time, and it’s worth the money. Save up for it, do what you need to and get your hands on doTERRA’s Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Frankincense oil so you can safely take it internally. There’s a reason God the Father gave it to Jesus as a child. It’s THAT good.

Frankincense oil is derived from the Boswellia sacra tree and trees of a similar species. The Boswellia sacra is characterized by its thin and peeling bark, tangled branches, and clustered leaves at the end of the branches. The trunks of these trees often have more than one stem; however, some have only one trunk. frank7-1.pngThe Boswellia sacra is native to Ethiopia, northern Somalia, south-western Oman, and southern Yemen.

Frankincense essential oil is derived from the ‘tears’ of trees that have been carefully scored, or “bled.” If cared for properly, frankincense trees can produce tears for hundreds of years! After a careful distillation process, the essential oil has a complex mixture of monoterpenes: alpha-Pinene, Limonene, alpha-Thujene, beta-Pinene — This number and variety of monoterpenes found in one compound is rare and it is this complex chemistry contributes to its renewing effects and makes Frankincense so powerful for supporting the diverse types of cells in the body.

In very much the same way as Myrrh is harvested, Frankincense oil has a high viscosity (aka “thickness” like honey). For centuries, the resin of the tree has been obtained by slashing or making an incision into the tree, which then emits large amounts of resin. After the resin secretes from the tree, it is then scraped off or collected as it drips onto the ground. When doTERRA obtains the resin from trees, the trees are carefully scored or “bled.” From there, the resin is delicately distilled and essential oils are extracted.

frank4-1.pngHey, by the way, just so you are aware, Frankincense is relatively expensive and it should be. If you find “affordable” Frankincense- that is a WARNING to you. Toss it, now. Blech. Gross. Ick. Harvesting Frankincense resin is a difficult, dangerous and delicate process that requires careful planning and precise skill and takes over five months to complete the process- and typically the people who literally risk their lives to get it, are grossly underpaid.

DoTERRA’s oils are products using only Co-Impact Sourcing (read more HERE) which provides frankincense harvesters with fair wages and on-time payments (including food and cash prepayments spread out during the year) by working around the layers of middlemen and instead working directly with those who harvest and sort the frankincense.

If your Frankincense is “affordable”, it’s actually code for CHEAP and adulterated, while still being called “pure” (yes, the law allows for that). If you want to see real results, doTERRA’s Frankincense is Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade and no one else in the world holds that designation. Thank you very much.

You’ll find Frankincense in many of doTERRA’s product like my personal favorite, the Lifelong Vitality Pack!! Get this liquid life in your body, asap!! With so many benefits and uses, Frankincense essential oil has rightfully earned its title as the “king” of all essential oils. It’s beautifying, aromatic, and health-promoting properties are extremely powerful and can easily improve an everyday lifestyle. For anyone seeking a helpful essential oil tip, always remember, if in doubt, use Frankincense.

I mentioned above that Frankincense is a “life or death” oil – what does that mean? Well, let’s start with this: We know it was given to Jesus when He was very young, but the Three Wise Men, the Magi from the East (read my post on Myrrh for more on this). We know that, even then, all three of the gifts Jesus was given were costly and precious, as they are today. And because we know that God is deeply purposeful, He would have given His only Son gifts with deep purpose, intention and meaning.

frank8Indeed, Frankincense fits that description. Jesus said Himself that He came to give use life, abundantly (John 10:10), but that He also came to die for the sins of mankind; He took the place of the Old Covenant sacrificial lambs, and offered Himself as the ultimate innocent sacrifice, once and for all- He died.

Frankincense is symbolic of Jesus death, and of His life. Jesus came for life and death. Frankincense, the king of oils, is a life and death oil. Here’s how:

Your body’s cells absorb the extremely small molecules of CPTG essential oils deep inside because they are small enough to pass through the cell membrane. Your cells treat essential oils like a food source and NOT like a medicine. Therefore, just like good foods give to you, your body’s cells are able to strengthen, grow, repair and thrive as needed. That is the “life” part- and doTERRA’s essential oils all behave in that manner.

(Side note: This is *exactly* why you MUST use only Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils- What are you feeding your cells!? Only doTERRA provides the CPTG designation, btw)

On the reverse side, the complexity of the chemistry of Frankincense means that it has the power of “death” also- While this amazing oil provides life to healthy cells, Frankincense has also been shown in numerous studies to bring death to unhealthy cells.

frank10.jpgUnhealthy cells cause all kinds of devastating damages to the human body and when they are present in their various forms, Frankincense communicates to them to kill themselves. Doctors and researchers are studying this like crazy because it has so much potential!

When you realize that, you can start to see why God placed such gifts into the hands of His son. Frankincense was representative of the reason for which Jesus was born in the first place- to bring life, and to die- which also ultimately brought life to all humanity.

John 3:16-17, “For this is how God loved the world: He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through Him.”

So, it’s almost CHRISTMAS- the biggest gift-giving holiday of the year. Here’s what you need to know about doTERRA’s Frankincense right now:

If you do not have a doTERRA membership, NOW is the time to get one!! If you place **ANY** order worth 200 Point Value this month, you’ll get a FREE 15 mL bottle of Frankincense! F.R.E.E.

Myrrh: Body, Mind and Spirit

It’s only a few days before December. DECEMBER. What the heck. December 2016. I seriously remember right where I was 20 years ago – wishing for Puma sneakers and some baby doll shirts for Christmas. (See this pic from Christmas Day, 1996? My dreams came true!) Where did the time go?

a19a.jpgOur family is doing Christmas much differently this year than we have in the past. We’re simplifying. Simplifying the gifts we give. Simplifying the decorations. Simplifying how we celebrate. I’m really looking forward to it!

In honor of the season, I am focusing on an essential oil that represents the birth of Jesus Christ. I cannot wait to show you how powerful this oil is- in both its effectiveness AND its symbolic meaning. I was truly blown away when I learned about the deep, spiritual meaning of Myrrh and why it was given to Jesus at His birth. I got SO choked up as I learned more and more. Even though the Wise Men most likely had no idea of the significance of their gifts, God did, and Myrrh was given to His son because it was a prophetic sign of things to come.

Grab a cuppa something warm, sit and rest for a moment and enjoy today’s Body, Mind and Spirit connection to: Myrrh.

Because of its versatility and effectiveness, Myrrh has been valuable across many cultures for centuries. With countless applications, Myrrh was used anciently for everything from medicine to religious purposes. Today, the resin extracted from the myrrh tree is transformed into an herbaceous, woody essential oil that still holds relevant applications. Whether you want to promote smooth, youthful-looking skin, promote emotional balance, or cleanse the body, Myrrh essential oil holds limitless uses for everyday life.

Myrrh Oil Uses and Benefits
  1. Add 1–2 drops of doTERRA’s Myrrh to ¼ cup of water with a little agave or honey to help ease the stomach.(Note: This information applies ONLY to doTERRA’s Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils. Do NOT ingest any others as they could be very harmful)
  2. Try on minor cuts, scrapes or burns, stings and other skin-surface irritations for soothing. Can blend into doTERRA’s Correct-X essential oil ointment as well to apply to skin problems.
  3. The soothing benefits of Myrrh essential oil are very useful when it comes to shmyrrh2-pngaving too- all kinds of places. If you don’t want to be left with irritated skin after shaving, try some DIY Razor Relief Serum (recipe below). Great for anyone who gets bumps in certain places…
  4. Myrrh essential oil is great when you want to uplift your mood or promote mental clarity or awareness. Myrrh is a popular oil to diffuse during the holidays, because it can help maintain peaceful feelings throughout the home.
  5. In addition to its benefits for the skin, Myrrh essential oil can be helpful when promoting healthy fingernails or toenails. If you have dry, crusty cuticles, try blending Myrrh with Vitamin E or coconut oil and massage in well, twice a day. This can also be used on the hands, lips, or any dry skin.
  6. Another beneficial property of Myrrh essential oil is that it promotes a youthful-looking complexion and offers a soothing sensation to the skin. To use Myrrh oil for skin, try adding one or two drops to your daily lotion or moisturizer. Apply on face and body. This mixture can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, particularly when used daily.
  7. Myrrh essential oil is well known for its ability to cleanse the mouth and throat. Daily, add one or two drops of Myrrh essential oil to your toothpaste when you want added cleansing benefits. For an effective mouth rinse, combine one drop of Myrrh oil and two ounces of water. Gargle this combination for 30 seconds to get extra clean. Great as a preventative too- keeping that mouth clean and sanitary and you’re less likely to … contract something.

Shaving may be essential, but razor bumps are not. Provide relief to your skin with this Razor Relief Serum enhanced with calming doTERRA essential oils that will help your skin look and feel beautiful.

Myrrh is mentioned 152 times in the Bible. In any form, it was costly because it only grows in specific locatimyrrh4 PNG.pngons, environments and conditions and it must be harvested in a specific manner.

Myrrh, similar to its cousin Frankincense, is a resin. It is the life-blood of the Commiphora myrrha tree and in order to access that blood, the tree must be repeatedly hacked at- stabbed and wounded, and made to bleed its resin.

The tree is heavily scarred from being repeatedly wounded and as the resin it bleeds begins to harden, it can then be collected and distilled into an essential oil.

The myrrh tree has a very distinctive, knotted trunk, is very thorny and doesn’t have many leaves because the tree exists in such a dry and harsh climate. Because of the abuse of its environment, the Myrrh tree often has an odd shape, very twisted as it grows amid the harsh winds and weather conditions.

myrrh6 PNG.pngDid you ever read a book or see a movie showing how people way back in …. well, olden times, would use ether to knock someone unconscious? Like a surgeon, for example. It’s actually the same (only safer) concept- ethers in CPTG essential oils are wonderful and effective for calming and rest. (To really knock a person out, however, you’d have to use very large and toxic doses- so don’t try it unless you’ve been thinking about catching some down time and state-funded calming and relaxation of your own-in the Big House on a murder rap.)

Myrrh essential oil is used today for many of same reasons it was used thousands of years ago- internal health, skin issues, cleansing, protection and rest. Scientifically speaking, the sesquiterpene ethers in Myrrh essential oil are known for their soothing properties, which is why Myrrh is useful for soothing the skin or soothing emotions.

Due to its highly aromatic nature, Myrrh has been used since ancient times for medicine, perfumery, incense, religious purposes, and burials. In Arabic, the world myrrh means “bitter.”

You know, I often wondered how the Wise Men, from the Far East, *extremely* far away, especially by camel, knew how to track Jesus down when He was born. They charted stars, yes. They studied prophecies, yet. But HOW did they know to do that? Traditional thought is that they had come from Persia. How could they have known or cared about some baby, born somewhere- enough to travel that far, packed with luxurious gifts to give?

Amagind then, one day, it hit me- the Book of Daniel! In the Bible, Daniel was written thousands of years before Jesus’ birth, during the time Israel had been taken into exile by the Medes and the Persians. We know Daniel had a position of *tremendous* influence as second-in-command to the king, and was willing to risk his life to worship God (remember the whole lions’ den debacle?)

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego too- all four of these intelligent and educated young men had risked their lives to serve the Lord. And all were given positions among the prophets, dream tellers and magicians. It is clear now- thousands of years before Jesus’ birth, God had paved the way for Him. The Wise Men from the East knew to come because DANIEL had taught them from the Scriptures and Biblical prophecies that the Savior would be coming. W.O.A.H. If that doesn’t blow your mind… God had a plan- the whole time…

So, as for Myrrh- one of the gifts the Wise Men from the East brought to Jesus, the newborn King of whom they had heard from long ago- did you read about how Myrrh is harvested??

Jesus Christ was born to die for the sins of the world. Isaiah, one of the prophets who foretold of Jesus’ death said this, My servant grew up in the Lord’s presence like a tender green shoot, like a root in dry ground… He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care…But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed…But it was the Lord’s good plan to crush Him and cause him grief…[and] When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, Hemyrrh5 will be satisfied. And because of His experience,my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for He will bear all their sins.” (Isaiah 53)

We know Jesus’ head was pierced with a crown of thorns. He was stabbed in His side where His blood flowed. He was repeatedly whipped and then nailed to the cross. And yet, it was His life-blood shed on the cross that has made way for our salvation and healing.

How deeply profound that, at His birth, Jesus was given Myrrh- from a tree made of thorns, that must be stabbed and wounded into its very core, to be made to bleed out its life-blood. Myrrh was also present at Jesus’s death and burial. Jesus was offered wine and myrrh before His crucifixion (Mark 15:23). Do you know why??

Remember that Myrrh’s chemistry is an ether- it was a drug, offered to Jesus as He suffered, to dull His pain- and He refused it. He refused to not feel every, single painful cut, lash, puncture, tear. His kept His mind clear and, in doing so, suffered greatly- for our sake.

Then, His body was wrapped in a 100-pound mixture of myrrh and aloes by Joseph of Arimathea. Argh. The symbolism and deliberate placement of Myrrh through Jesus’ life is almost overwhelming. God the Father knew what He was doing, all along! The Wise Men brought the young Jesus a gift that was prophetic of His suffering to come, of the harshness He would have to endure in His environment, of the pain it would take to shed His blood.

Isn’t that SO POWERFUL? I mean, look at the purpose that God infused into Jesus’ life- it was all for us, friends. And beautiful, strong, resilient Myrrh was the way that God used to show us He knew what He was doing.

Be blessed, friends!

Eucalyptus: Body, Mind and Spirit

I was sick a lot as a kid. A lot, a lot. I was skinny, pale, red-haired, freckled and always coming down with something. For real. I had scabies and head lice, constant bronchitis, pneumonia, and rashes galore, to pretty much everything. Add in the pale pink, super thick Golden Girls glasses and, well, hi.

3rd grade.JPGWhat I hated the most, though, besides the thick, pink penicillin tincture I’d have to drink that tasted like gritty bananas, was when my mother would fill her huge, yellow, Corningware mixing bowl with boiling hot water and force me to stick my face into it and take deep breaths. To add insult to injury, she’d throw a towel over my head so I couldn’t even look around and my glasses would fog up.

Thankfully I outgrew a lot of that nonsense, but guess what? I still have breathing issues from time to time- but no more huge, yellow Corningware mixing bowls for me, MOM!

So, yeah, doTERRA’s Eucalyptus essential oil has changed my life. Nothing funny about that. This little lovely supports clear breathing and open airways among other things.  SO MANY other things and I’m taking you there. RIGHT. NOW. Today’s body, mind and spirit connection is to: Eucalyptus.

The changing of the seasons can be a challenging time for the immune and respiratory systems, don’t ya know? At least it is at our house. (Well, used to be)

Oils with high amounts of the chemical component eucalyptol are highly effective in the respiratory system. In fact, Chinese scientists identified in preliminary tests that eucalyptol protected against immune system changes and respiratory challenges commonly associated with seasonal changes.

REMEMBER, now: In order for essential oils to be completely effective, they must be pure and potent. Too often, essential oils available for sale contain impurities and fillers (See more HERE). These unwanted substances weaken the power of an essential oil and can reduce its ability to satisfy individual needs. To ensure that all doTERRA essential oil products are effective, potent, and pure, doTERRA puts each batch of essential oils through the CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® protocol. If it’s not CPTG do NOT put it on or in your body- but then, what the heck is the POINT?? There isn’t. Just go with doTERRA.

Eucalyptus Oil Uses and Benefits
  1. Keep your surfaces clean and fingerprint free with the cleansing benefits of Eucalyptus oil all-purpose spray. RECIPE BELOW. This spray is perfect for a quick clean around the house and smells great!
  2. Make your shower experience even more relaxing. Place two drops Eucalyptus oil directly onto the shower floor while you are showering. The steam from the water will create a natural diffuser for the Eucalyptus oil, leaving you with a clear, invigorated feeling. You can do this with doTERRA’s Breathe too. It’s beautiful especially on days when you prefer to breathe clearly.
  3. For those days when you, or someone you want to love, has dog breath, do some swishing with water and 1-2 drops of Eucalyptus. It can help kill off all the ick that causes bad breath, not just the breath itself. Can also be useful in helping guard against many other common mouth issues. Swish. Gargle. Repeat as needed.
  4. Hey! Got skin? Don’t just settle for a run-of-the-mill lotion. Transform your moisturizer into a beneficial product for your skin and your senses. Add one drop of Eucalyptus essential oil to a moisturizer of your choice. Rub this mixture together and then apply it to your skin for revitalizing benefits. Great with Frankincense and Lavender too!
  5.  Next time you feel tension, place a few drops of Eucalyptus oil into your hands, cup your hands over your nose, and inhale deeply. This simple and quick process will give you a calming yet energizing boost. Took my kids to the children’s museum, so, yeah, this was me T.O.D.A.Y.
  6. koala.jpgI have a few friends who do massage for a living and they use doTERRA’s oils, especially Eucalyptus to create a soothing massage experience. Eucalyptus can be easily combined with a cream or lotion of your choice to help spread the effects of the oil while also bringing moisturizing benefits to your skin.  The chemical components found in Eucalyptus oil also produce a soothing, cooling vapor, which makes it an ideal oil for massage use.
  7. The aromatic benefits of Eucalyptus oil can be easily obtained when diffused. During the winter months or on a cold, dreary day, use Eucalyptus oil to invigorate, soothe, and uplift, not to mention respiratory support. Eucalyptus blends well with Thyme, Rosemary, Marjoram, Lavender, and Cedarwood essential oils for diffusion.  Let’s keep those airways (and minds) open!
  8. Yoga and meditation can both be calming activities that can help unify and revitalize your body. Part of what makes these activities so renewing is having time to clear the mind of unnecessary or cluttered thoughts. To help enhance your yoga or meditation experience, incorporate Eucalyptus oil into your practice, as it helps clear the mind.

If you are pregnant, nursing or under a doctor’s care, consult your physician. Avoid contact with eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas, PLEASE. (geez.)

Have you heard of carcinogens? Even if you haven’t, they’ve heard of you and they can seriously cause cancer because they’re nasty. Let’s not be victims any longer! No more cleaning the house, yay!

Ok, well, no. If you’re one of those house cleaning type of people, you’re one fo the many breathing them in daily, through innocuous household items, like spray cleaners. DoTERRA makes a cleaner that we use in our house, but you can make your own too:

eucalyptus4Hey, tell your maid! There is no need to pull out your rubber gloves and surgical masks when you clean my home! It might surprise you to know that you can concoct simple and inexpensive non-toxic cleaners from ingredients already lying around your house. Using essential oils to create your own cleaning spray is not only safe on the environment, but is safe for your family as well. This spray is perfect for cleaning hard surfaces in the kitchen, bathroom, etc.

1/4 cup white vinegar
1¾ cups water

eucalyptus6A good salve can be the base to many amazing recipes. Similar to the texture of petroleum jelly, you can customize this salve with essential oils to meet your needs. Add doTERRA’s Breathe to help maintain feelings of clear airways, doTERRA’s Serenity or Lavender to help you rest better, or Citrus Bliss for an invigorating moisturizer. The options are endless!

  5. Pour in container and allow to set for 2 hours.
  6. To use, apply to skin or on chest.

Fun facts: Eucalyptus trees are sometimes referred to as Gum Trees, chewed pretty much by just Koala. I, myself, do not chew. Also, commonly used to make didgeridoos, a wind instrument used by Aborigines.

Derived from the leaf of a tall evergreen tree, Eucalyptus oil offers many topical and aromatic benefits. Because the main chemical components of Eucalyptus oil are eucalyptol and alpha-terpineol, this essential oil has a soothing, cooling vapor.

Eucalyptus is a powerful, natural disinfectant that can be toxic in large quantities. Often you will see warnings to keep it away from children. Many cough suppressants (liquid, lozenges etc) cautious against use with children under 6. Why? Because Eucalyptus in raw form of any kind is extremely powerful. See this sweet, lil’ pun’kin? That’s my Emmeline. Babies like her don’t need something so strong. doTERRA has a lot of essential oil options if you’re concerned you might overuse or misunderstand Eucalyptus.Really, very young kids simply don’t need such force.

313181_10150374990728699_1127865459_nIt’s like… she’s crying for food and you hand her a piece of meat and a steak knife. Slow down, there, Momma. All in good time.

Eucalyptus’s main constituent is 1,8 cineole. If you look at the available data on this component, you find that daily use of properly applied essential oils are a safe and healthful practice for kids. (Of course, it is always a good safety practice to store essential oils out of reach of children anyway because those humans seriously lack self-control at times)

It can be applied topically or aromatically, but it is one of a few essential oils that is not recommended for internal use. DoTERRA’s Eucalyptus is *exceedingly* powerful because of its purity. Err on the side of caution and start small.

For adults, undiluted application is acceptable. As with any essential oil topical application, to preserve the lasting effects of the oil and prevent flash-off or volatilization, one should consider dilution with a carrier oil (e.g. Fractioned Coconut Oil, etc.). For children or those with sensitive skin, moderate to heavy dilution is recommended.eucalyptus2

The reports of serious adverse events associated with Eucalyptus oil in scientific literature have always involved excessively large (> 5mL) amounts taken internally or placed directly into the nose. That is pretty  much a third of a doTERRA bottle of Eucalyptus, chugged all at once. What the heck. Greedy.

Of course, these excessive amounts are well beyond the normal usage range. Nonetheless, eucalyptus oil, like all oils, should be used cautiously with younger children. Overwhelming the body with too much essential oil can sometimes lead to unwanted outcomes so, it’s important that you stay educated:

  • start small
  • dilute as you go
  • increase gradually
  • see how your own body responds
  • adjust as needed

SO. Now that you’re an expert on Eucalyptus, riddle me this: What part of the body is, like Eucalyptus essential oil, powerful and effective when used correctly, but can be toxic when misused, or in large doses? Answer: It’s the tongue. Yes, that piece of meat between your cheeks.

In James chapter 3, that tiny troublemaker is addressed thoroughly and it’s not pretty. Who of us hasn’t, at one time or another, misused the power of the tongue and, well, said something… something that should not have been said? Something we regretted or wished we could take back/change/reword/unsay?

Someone I love dearly once said to me, when I was a teenager: “Some people swing with an ax, but you cut with a scalpel.”

You know, I never forgot that? It’s always stuck with me and it’s something 1) I have never been proud of and 2) I have repeatedly submitted to the Lord to help me gain control over.

eu2.pngJames 3:2-10 says, Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself. People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!”

Have you ever allowed your tongue set your WHOLE LIFE on fire? Oh, I HAVE. Powerful and effective when used correctly, the tongue is. Words that can bring life, uplift and encourage, build up, restore, educate, praise. But, toxic when misused- oh yes. Words can literally kill. This is WAY too chunky of a subject to tackle here, but let me encourage you- if your heart is filled with the Word of God, your mouth will be filled with His words also- and His words are always life-giving. THAT is where the real power lay.

The Bible is FULL of wisdom concerning the tongue and what it speaks because the mouth betrays the content of the heart (Luke 6:45), and while we look on the outward appearance, the Lord perceives the inward heart of us all (1 Samuel 16:7).eu1

Proverbs 10:32, “The lips of the godly speak helpful words…”

Proverbs 15:28, “The heart of the godly thinks carefully before speaking…”

Ephesians 4:29, “Let no unwholesome word proceed out of your mouth, but only that which is good for building up, that it may give grace to the listeners.”

Psalm 19:41, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.”

And, finally, here’s this: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:21) –> If you’ve ever killed someone’s spirit with your words, welcome to the club. Thankfully, God is full of compassion, slow to anger and rich in love (Psalm 145:8)- and we need to be the same way toward others.psalm

Fill your mouth with the words of God, and you’ll never have to worry about what you’llsay. Your words will always bring life. King David wrote, “I will bless the Lord at all times, His praise will continually be in my mouth.” (Psalm 34:1)

It won’t happen overnight and it won’t be easy, especially if you’re like me and words are your thing. But the Word of God can be trusted. Fill your heart with His Words and your mouth will speak them.

Be blessed, friends!

Lemongrass: Body, Mind and Spirit

Being a born-and-raised New Yorker, and having grown up in a family that did a lot of international travel and had a lot of friends around the world, I am a big fan of all different kinds of foods. My early and frequent exposure to things like balut, curries, sushi, borscht, chimarrão and the like have given me an appreciation for the flavors and smells of the world.

However, if you don’t spend a lot of time cooking or eating international foods, or if you aren’t an outdoorsy type of person, your interaction with flavors like the snappy, fresh and clean herb Lemongrass has probably been limited. But ooooh you’re missing out!

Lemongrass has been used around the world for thousands of years for a million different things- from health and wellness to a natural pesticide to preserving food to being used as a pheromone for bees (weird.) It’s beautiful, surprising, invigorating, uplifting, cleansing and useful- so many of my favorite aspects of, well, anything- especially people!

Get connected to Lemongrass, right now, in body, mind and spirit…!

Lemongrass has way too many uses to list in this humble blog, but its applications for the body are amazing!

One thing I, personally, use Lemongrass is for supporting healthy thyroid function. Just roll it directly on the thyroid to help support your thyroid. If it feels hot (which it does for me at times), rub a bit of lotion or oil on the thyroid first and then rub Lemongrass on. I also use this, along with Peppermint, on my c-section scar. Not to minimize its appearance (there are other oils for that), but every so often it will give me trouble and I rub a few drops of both *around* the scar and it helps tremendously. I do the same for weird muscle spasms that crop up or just a sore feeling in my midsection. In the past I have turned to chemicals to help, but no more. This is my go-to blend when I can’t tolerate how I’m feeling.

Here are just a few more ideas:

  • Put a drop into water and chug it down to promote healthy digestive function
  • You can even combine Lemongrass essential oil with Peppermint oil in a capsule or in water to support healthy gastrointestinal function and maintain healthy digestion.
  • Rub or spritz on skin before going outside for a natural bug repellant.
  • Diffuse around you when you’re outside cooking on the grill or eating on the patio to keep bugs away
  • Apply to muscles and joints for a soothing sensation
  • *Awesome* for deodorizing. Put into a foot bath for stinky tootsies.
  • Diffuse Lemongrass oil when you want to address feelings of nervousness, or eliminate mental fatigue. Diffusing Lemongrass essential oil can also help promote a positive outlook and heighten your awareness because it’s so invigorating.
  • Put a drop into your hand, rub your hands together, and inhale softly for up to 30 seconds or longer as desired for a stronger and more direct aromatic application
  • Great for purifying skin. Massage it into skin with a carrier oil for deep cleansing and help promote pure, toned skin

lemongrass4Because Lemongrass oil includes subtle citrus notes; a pungent, smoky aroma; and a refreshing, herbaceous scent, it blends well for diffusion with a variety of oils that share similar qualities. Blend Lemongrass oil with the herbal scents of Basil, the fresh aroma of Spearmint, or the warm, spicy fragrance of Cardamom oil.

Finally, Lemongrass, while not “hot” like Oregano, can feel too warm for your skin. So dilute with a carrier oil as needed. Also, be careful when applying and spending large amounts of time in the direct sunlight because it can be photosensitive.

DoTERRA’s Lemongrass is grown by family farmers in Southern India. The plant produces a smoky, citrus essential oil that offers a variety of benefits.. The evergreen lemongrass plant, also known as Cymbopogon flexuosus, is a tall, perennial plant with long, aromatic leaves that are cut and steam-distilled to produce Lemongrass essential oil. On a more general level, the lemongrass plant is often used to extract essential oil to be used in perfumes, detergents, soaps, etc. doTERRA’s Lemongrass, specifically can also be taken internally, but lesser quality lemongrass can be used in commercially produced foods like baked goods, gums, and candies. Scientists in India studied the genetic origins of Lemongrass essential oil, which is native to India and found significant investment by the Lemongrass plant in producing a diverse essential oil. lemongrass8The diversity of its genes correlates to the diversity of components in Lemongrass essential oil. It is theorized that plants with more diverse essential oil component profiles also have a diverse profile of essential oil biosynthesis genes, making more widely useful and effective in many, many areas of the body, and life in general.  #power

Harvesting lemongrass is a labor-intensive process, but for families in Southern India, it has been a way of life for generations. doTERRA chose Southern India as a sourcing location because of the high levels of rain fall in the area. A greater amount of rain fall creates a higher citral content in the lemongrass, which makes it superior for essential oil use.

Want to know why it’s so effective against bugs? Lemongrass has a secret superhero alter ego known as: Citronella

One of the things, besides extreme purity, that sets doTERRA apart is how they source oils. I’ll devote a post to that in the future, but t’s absolutely and literally changing the world. Lemongrass is harvested by hand, using a sickle—which is part of what makes the harvesting process so physically demanding, so much respect to those who bring us this powerful gift from God.

Finally, the chemical makeup of Lemongrass essential oil includes the constituents geranial and neral, which are aldehydes. Typically, aldehydes are known for their distinctly potent fragrances, which is evident in the case of Lemongrass oil. Aldehydes have many functions within essential oils, including the ability to cleanse surfaces. They can also lessen feelings of stress when diffused. However, essential oils with geranial and neral are particularly known for helping to maintain healthy gastrointestinal function when used internally. Geranial and neral are also known as soothing aldehydes, which is why Lemongrass and Melissa oil are both soothing oils that share similarities in chemical structure.

The nature of Lemongrass is highly distinct and pungent. It is a plant that was absolutely created by God to stand out. You can smell it a long way off, and when it is uprooted or cut open, it releases an incredibly powerful aroma that is easily recognizable.

Let me get mildly political for a moment and point to our darling millennials – yes, the ones you’re reading about  on the news- protesting, screaming, crying out for justice, banding together to push for changes they feel need to happen in the wake of the 2016 presidential elections.

Whatever your opinion is on what they are doing, and why- you have to admit one thing: They are deeply impassioned. They are committed. They are pushy. They are potent. Just like you can distinguish Lemongrass from a ways off, you can smell a millennial in the room. They are pungent with their passion- speaking, arguing, pushing. They’re hard to miss when they get worked up. It’s admirable in a way, truly. Props. I can’t think of much that would get me to block traffic and sleep in the streets.

The story of the prodigal son, in Luke 15 is a famous one, but here’s something the Lord showed me that really stopped me in my tracks, so bear with me here because its good:

We know that the prodigal son went to his father and asked for his portion of the inheritance and then, Luke 15:13 says this, “Not many days later, the younger son gathered everything together, and journeyed to a distant country, and there squandered his possessions in prodigal living.”  –>  Note: “Prodigal” living

I looked up that word “prodigal” in the Greek and it is sometimes translated “riotous” or “wasteful” – but that’s not what it really means. It means “poured out”. prodigal.jpgThe prodigal son is the poured out son. The problem? He was pouring himself out on all the wrong things- on friends, on possessions, on experiences, on wasteful living. This young man, full of life and passion and enthusiasm, poured himself out to the point that he had nothing left and was willing to live with pigs just to eat.

We were created to be poured out. How do I know this? Because Jesus poured Himself out.

Titus 3:5-6 says, “but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of rebirth and the renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior.”

In Matthew 26:28 Jesus is sharing His Last Supper and says, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

So, the prodigal son was poured out, because we were created to be poured out as children of God- however, he was misguided in where to allow his passion to be poured out and he emptied himself without cause. Much like some young people we know…..

lemongrass7Did you know that as lemongrass grows, it forms a tight clump that’s extremely difficult to dig into? Much like our millennials, right?! Being poured out for anything other than Jesus Christ makes us all prodigals. Being a prodigal doesn’t mean we stray from home for the wrong reasons- it’s when we pour ourselves out into the wrong things and empty ourselves without eternal cause.

As a result, we are laid bare, and end up feeling unfulfilled, sinking lower and lower into the emptiness because it is our nature to pour ourselves into things we are passionate about. But what are we passionate about?? What is worth being poured out to, until empty?

Only the Kingdom of God, because only Jesus Chris can replenish and fill us up. I want to challenge you, and myself, to think about being poured out- are you a prodigal, being poured out to the things that will leave you empty? Or are you, like Jesus, pouring yourself out to show the love of God to a lost and dying world? For me, I want to take inspiration from those pouring themselves out, but channel that pungent, powerful energy into eternity!
