You, 20 Years Later: Body, Mind and Spirit

Let’s wax philosophical for a moment. Why? Because there’s something extremely important we need to stop and talk about- but it’s one of those things we all need to s.t.o.p and think about sometimes. It’s a gut check. Let’s get real for a moment and explore you. Ok, ready?

Think about your life 20 years from now. Like… really think about it. Go ahead, take a sec.

How old will you be? (In 20 years, I’ll be turning 60, eek!)

What do you think you’ll look like? Picture you, in 20 years.

What do you think you’ll be doing?

…How do you think you’ll be feeling?

In 20 years, if you changed absolutely nothing in your health, do you think your body and mind will be better off than they are today? Or… worse?

What is your VISION for your health?

Today’s Body, Mind and Spirit connection is to…. YOU.

We all age. It’s a fact of life. Since Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden of Eden, mankind has been searching for the elusive answer to longer life, the Fountain of Youth, the secret to staying young. But living long is not nearly as important as living well.

There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. – Albert Einstein

Our bodies are the vehicles that will carry us from birth until death, whenever that may be, and everything we do is a choice that affects the bodies we were given.

So, here are some questions to pose to yourself today:

How do you feel RIGHT NOW? What health issues are you struggling with day to day? How are you coping with them? What are you doing to help yourself feel better, and live better?

30Now, think about this – in 20 years, will your body and mind be better or worse than it is today, right now, at this moment?

If you answered “worse”- think about why that is. Are you currently struggling with health issues? Have you resigned yourself to “your fate”? Is it possible you feel like lifestyle choices have taken you too far and there’s no going back?

If you answered “better”- what assurance do you have? Are you doing something to invest in the wellness of your body today that will pay off as you age?

Did you know that approximately 92% of older adults have at least one long-lasting health problem, and 77% have at least two? In 20 years from now, will that be you? How do you know?

How about this- According to the National Council on Aging, seven million Americans adults struggle with long-term sadness or stressful feelings and thoughts, and many do not receive treatment.Two-thirds of older adults struggling with maintaining a strong, healthy mind do not receive the treatment they need because current preventative services for this population are extremely limited.

Life is a gift and if you don’t feel that way, it’s time to explore a lasting, meaningful change. It’s time to choose to invest in you. Yes, I said invest. Your health is an investment. You are investing in your health, whether you realize it or not. But what are you investing?

Are you investing healthy foods or unhealthy ones? Are you investing into your body chemical substances or naturally beneficial ones? Are you investing active habits or sedentary behavior? Are you investing in supplements and health strengthening supports or just living on a hope and a prayer?

In 20 years, it is possible to be better, more vibrant, healthier and happier with yourself than you are right now- and it’s more than possible to be much worse.

What do you see NOW? What do you WANT to see?

So, what can you do?

Most health and dietary supplements and other ‘natural’ approaches to wellness are, sadly, ineffective, at best and, at worst, harmful. But that’s okay, because there’s a disclaimer, releasing companies from most responsibility. After all, what you put into your mouth and your body is your business, right?

Do you know what the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 21 is? Here’s the short version:

*These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Note this from the FDA: “Dietary Supplements can be beneficial to your health — but taking supplements can also involve health risks. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not have the authority to review dietary supplement products for safety and effectiveness before they are marketed…If a serious problem associated with a dietary supplement occurs, manufacturers must report it to FDA as an adverse event. FDA can take dietary supplements off the market if they are found to be unsafe or if the claims on the products are false and misleading.”

So, you try your best to invest in your health and you take all sorts of expensive dietary supplements to keep everything in tip-top shape for that “20 years from now” mark- only to find out that it is not enough. Most supplements you can buy on the market have molecules that are too large for the body to absorb and, as such, they are processed as waste. Ever get that bright yellow pee after you take vitamins? That’s why.

What’s a body to do?

You may hear conflicting opinions about the need for supplements to your diet, however, noted, “The typical eating patterns currently consumed by many in the United States do not align with the Dietary Guidelines…About three-fourths of the population has an eating pattern that is low in vegetables, fruits, dairy, and oils [and] most Americans exceed the recommendations for added sugars, saturated fats, and sodium.”

Check out these graphics from the Council for Responsible Nutrition:

Harvard Medical School reported that, “The average American diet leaves a lot to be desired. Research finds our plates lacking in a number of essential nutrients, including calcium, potassium, magnesium, and vitamins A, C, and D. It’s no wonder that more than half of us open a supplement bottle to get the nutrition we need. Many of us take supplements not just to make up for what we’re missing, but also because we hope to give ourselves an extra health boost—a preventive buffer to ward off disease. Getting our nutrients straight from a pill sounds easy, but supplements don’t necessarily deliver on the promise of better health. Some can even be dangerous…”

While it’s certainly advantageous to get your nutrition from healthy food sources, supplementing your diet it usually necessary.

So, what are you putting into your body that will benefit (or harm) your state of being 20 years down the road? What is your vision for who you want to be?? Don’t have one? Start there and reverse engineer it– find out who you are- 20 years from now by looking at who you are today. What steps do you need to take to get to where you want to be? What investments do you need to make RIGHT NOW?

INVEST in yourself. INVEST in your family. INVEST in your future.

What is an investment? It’s putting money/time/effort into something now, something that costs you- so that it pays off down the road.

Who will you be 20 years from now, as a human?

THAT is an important question to ask, heart and soul. Spending time connecting to God each day, grounding yourself in Truth and centering yourself around Him is the best investment you can make in yourself, ever.

Hopefully you will be a better version of yourself- stronger, more confident, healthier in body, mind and spirit, more stable, kinder…

One thing my mom always said about reading the Bible is this: Just like you can’t remember what you ate for breakfast when you were 5, you know it nourished you. It helped you grow. It’s the same with reading God’s Word. Maybe you can’t exactly recall what you read, but it nourished you. It helped you grow.

Move in that direction.

Hebrews 4: 12-13 says, “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before His eyes, and He is the one to whom we are accountable.

Don’t fear being laid bare before God. He already knows. It is to Him that we make ourselves accountable. We need the nourishment of the Word of God in our daily ‘diet’ because it is alive and powerful. Your spirit needs it to live and grow.

Jude 1:20-21 says, “But you, beloved, build yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God…”

Just like you investing in building up your physical health, we must also build up our spiritual health as well. In 20 years from now, what do you look like on the inside?

INVEST in YOU- Body, Mind and Spirit
