Vetiver: Body, Mind and Spirit

I won a bottle of Vetiver earlier this week during a call with our awesome team. As business builders with doTERRA, we have received a *tremendous* amount of support- in the business, in our personal development, in our education with essential oils and so much more. The wellness community we are part of  goes far beyond a pursuit of money. It’s the pursuit of people.

I mean, think about it – if you had the solution to world hunger, wouldn’t you want to share that with, well, the world?! The pursuit of people is what moves doTERRA, and what builds hope and what changes lives. We love the vision we’ve caught – to reach the world with the hope that essential oils bring for wellness, for wholeness, for relief, to a hurting world.

All that to say, when I won a bottle of Vetiver, I was so excited! This is an oil I haven’t had in my collection and I cannot wait to get my (literal) hands on it. Enjoy the body, mind and spirit connection to: Vetiver

Vetiver is earthy, dense and dark used for its calming and cooling effects. It has a sweet, woody, and smoky aroma–emitting a strong, earthy feeling, and its effect on the mind is powerful. Its excellent for skin, and for restoring vitality to the mind’s balance and body systems.

vetiver-plantA recently published experimental study examining the effects of inhaled Vetiver essential oil found that the oil possesses refreshing properties that may make it a go-to oil when you need to focus. Instead of reaching for your morning (or afternoon) cup of coffee or tea, try reaching for your bottle of Vetiver essential oil. Vetiver can be diffused too, so it gets right into that limbic system and makes things happen (or go away, as the case may be).

Also — a little goes a long way!

  • Vetiver is rich in sesquiterpenes, which gives it a grounding effect. Get Vetiver all over you when it’s time to settle down from anger, tension, stress, worries, or just that general feeling of being overwhelmed.
  • You know what? Just stop and fill the bath tub with warm water and add a couple of drops of Vetiver essential oil the water. Perfect for deep relaxation. The aromatic benefits of Vetiver oil will also aid in creating a soothing and calming atmosphere that helps you face the rest of “It All”.
  • Calming, grounding effect on emotions. Apply to the back of the neck and bottoms of the feet. Also, inhale.
  • To help promote a restful night’s sleep, rub Vetiver oil on the bottom of your feet. Vetiver oil is a great essential oil for sleep and relaxation and can help give your body the sleep it needs.
  • Before traveling for business or relaxation, take one to two drops of Vetiver with Lemon in a capsule for immune-supporting properties*
  • After a hard day’s work, apply as part of a soothing aromatic massage. Great for the bottoms of tired, hard working feet too!
  • Use as an earthy base note in your favorite DIY diffuser blends
  • Used in many popular perfumes

Known as the “oil of tranquility”, Vetiver’s powerful grounding effects are especially strong at the hormonal level. It helps influence the way hormones interact with the body, and because essential oils have such small molecules, they can communicate with the body’s systems faster and more effectively than any other method, meaning you’ll start to feel Vetiver’s strength sooner in your body. Its strength as an oil comes directly from the strength of the plant, a tropical grass species renowned for its rich essential oil.

Did you know that many of your favorite perfumes contain Vetiver oil as a base note? In fact, Vetiver plants were originally introduced to Haiti by French perfumers. Oh and the way doTERRA harvests Vetiver contributes to this little thing called saving the world. See more here.

doTERRA Vetiver essential oil comes from the roots of Vetiver plants grown in Haiti. The areas where Vetiver grows have been affected by deforestation and erosion. Consequently, the soil where vetiver is grown is often poor. Fortunately, the Vetiver plant thrives in difficult conditions due to two key qualities: First, its roots are dense, extensive, and grow straight down, which allows it to hold a lot of soil in place. This protects both the plant and the land from erosion.vetiver2

Second, there are several studies that show that Vetiver uniquely thrives in heavy metal-rich soils. In a process called “phytoremediation”, it leaches, or takes up, heavy metals from the soil, returning the soil to a healthy state. Studies have shown that even in soil extensively contaminated by heavy metals, no DNA damage is evident in the plants. Because of these properties, researchers are investigating its utility in cleaning up mining waste, which often contain various heavy metals.

doTERRA’s essential oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade, which means they undergo more testing than any other brand of essential oil on the planet. NONE of doTERRA’s essential oils have ever tested positive for even trace amounts of heavy metals, however, plenty of other companies sell Vetiver as well- and they do not test theirs to the level doTERRA does. Ask them to show you their tests and they’ll proudly show you 7 they rigorously conducted. Ask doTERRA and you’ll get 20.

Now that you know the tendency of Vetiver to possess heavy metals- WHY, oh WHY would you mess around with any other essential oil?! (See more on doTERRA’s *rigorous* testing methods here) MOST TESTED. MOST TRUSTED. It’s only doTERRA.

The strength of the Vetiver plant is astounding and so inspirational!

In spite of this plant being subjected to the erosion of its environment and the devastation of its surroundings, Vetiver digs down deep. Deeper still. In spite of poor soil conditions, a plant’s most vital path to growth, Vetiver doesn’t just survive, it thrives! How? Instead of relying on the soil around it, Vetiver collects its own soil through a complex, deep and dense root system and holds on to it, essentially growing from what it can collect for itself and use efficiently in hard, lean times.

And as if that weren’t tough enough, Vetiver manages to take in the heavy metals from its soil and give back to the earth a soil that is once again healthy! Amid trials, and hardships, lack, and attack, poisons and difficulties, Vetiver sustains *no* damage to its DNA as a plant. I think Vetiver might just be my spirit plant, or, at least, one I aspire to be like!

In John 16:33, Jesus said, “…These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” — So we know that, because of sin, we can expect to experience troubles, trials, lean times, unjust attacks, pain and more in this life, but Jesus defeated the power of sin, and that’s why we can take refuge in Him and find our peace. Then, instead of succumbing to our feelings about our circumstances and surroundings, we become resilient and experience victory. Not outside of troubles, but in the midst of them.

And, like the Vetiver plant, we can even, then, give back, walking away in better condition than when we arrived.

When I think of resilience and strength, I always think about the Apostle Paul. He was beaten, stoned, imprisoned, shipwrecked, bitten by snakes and more- all for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And yet, he never wavered. He didn’t allow discouragement to overcome him. He didn’t stop pressing forward. He changed the entire world, actually. Here is his perspective of hard times, in his own words:

In Philippians 4, Paul writes:

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.  The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you… for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content:  I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.  I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

If God is your strength, you will still experience hardship because that is the nature of living in a fallen world, however, like Paul- we can, in whatever state we are, be content, grow, flourish, and give good things in return.

Remember, no one can rob you of your joy, your peace or your strength- you can only choose to give it away, or never let it go.
